Treatment of Diabetes

Treatment of diabetes is important because diabetes mellitus is a disorder in which the body cannot properly regulate the sugar level in the blood. Glucose is a type of sugar found in the blood that the liver produces. This blood glucose then gets into the cells to produce body fuel and energy. Several hormones, including insulin (the hormone secreted by the pancreas) regulate the amount of blood sugar that goes into the cells. Without the necessary treatment of diabetes, a person suffering from this condition would not be able to properly process blood sugar.

A person with diabetes does not produce insulin or does not use the insulin properly for the cells to absorb enough glucose. The sugar stays in the blood, thus greatly increasing the blood sugar levels which, in turn, harm not only cells but also organs that are exposed to the high sugar level. Diabetes can also develop complications, so it is important to seek treatment of diabetes.

Medical Treatment of Diabetes

Medical treatment of diabetes is highly personalized and individualized, depending on the patient’s condition – other medical problems present, complications, age, lifestyle, etc. But generally, a person with Type I Diabetes needs regular treatments of insulin to sustain his health and life. A patient with Type II Diabetes can be given time to let his blood sugar normalize without medication or other treatment of diabetes, depending on his condition upon diagnosis.

Best Treatment of Diabetes

The best treatment of diabetes is maintaining a healthy lifestyle, which include the following:

A healthy diet is an important part of treatment of diabetes.

A person with diabetes must be conscious of all the food that he eats. He needs a well-balanced diet to keep his health as well as prevent blood levels from rising or other complications from developing. Low fat, low concentrated sugar and high fiber is advisable. In fact, a proper diet may be the only treatment of diabetes a person needs to maintain appropriate blood sugar levels.

Exercise in tandem with medical treatment of diabetes.

Regular exercise is important to maintain body weight, strengthen the organs (heart, lungs, etc) and to prevent any complications that the condition might entail. He must avoid a sedentary lifestyle, but must also seek professional medical advice before going through any exercise regimen. 20-minute walks 3 times a week is already highly beneficial.

Diabetic individuals should avoid smoking.

The habit, in itself, is already harmful to the body. With a condition such as diabetes also present, chances of complications increase greatly. Smoking damages blood vessels and causes heart and lung problems, among others and can further complicate treatment of diabetes.

Alcohol consumption should be avoid by diabetic persons.

The use of alcoholic beverages must be limited to the amount allowed by the healthcare provider, if at all. Alcohol can cause low or high blood sugar levels so it must be consumed with caution. In addition, keep in mind that alcohol can have a negative effect on any medications used in the treatment of diabetes.

It is important for a patient to consistently check his blood glucose levels, and seek advice from a medical professional for the treatment of diabetes.
